Scottish Translator

Turn Plain English Into Proper Patter

The coo lookin' puzzled at yer English

Dinnae ken how tae say it in Scottish? I've got ye sorted. Here's whit the app actually does, wi' real examples so ye can see for yersel'.

Whit It Actually Does

Ye type in plain English, ye get proper Scottish patter back. No' a word-for-word swap, mind. Scottish isnae just English wi' a funny accent. It's rhythm, attitude, humour and context. The app keeps the meaning intact while giein it the full treatment.

Here's a wee taste of whit comes oot the other end:

Ye say I say back
I'm really tiredI'm wabbit
That's very goodThat's pure belter
I don't knowI've no' got a scooby
It's cold outIt's baltic oot there
She's talking nonsenseShe's haverin'
He's drunkHe's steamin'
Be quietHaud yer wheesht
It's raining heavilyIt's chuckin' it doon
I'm soakedI'm drookit
That's disgustingThat's boggin'
Small childWee bairn
Are you alright?Ye awright, aye?

Every one of these is in the dictionary wi' a full definition, real voice audio, and a quiz question. The translator isnae a novelty button. It's a doorway intae the language.

Turn It Up: The Gallus Dial

The app has three translation settings. Same sentence, three very different results. Here's "That man is being unreasonable" put through the dial:

Mild "That fella's bein' a bit much"
Broad "That fella's away wi' it"
Pure Gallus "That fella's a pure radge, so he is"

Mild keeps it polite. Broad is proper Scottish. Pure Gallus is for when ye want tae commit tae the bit entirely. Ye've been warned.

Works Baith Ways

Ye can also go the other direction. Heard something Scottish and havenae got a clue? Paste it in, get the English sense, then use the dictionary and audio features tae actually learn it. That's the difference between a translator and a learning tool. This one's baith.

No' sure where tae start? Try the dictionary. Over 1,900 words wi' real voice audio, phonetic guides, etymology, and quiz questions. It's free.
